Current Research

I am currently working on a research project titled, "Outsourced: Hospital Support Workers in Vancouver". This project focuses on the experiences of hospital cleaners, food service, and other and other health care support workers  in Vancouver area hospitals. The qualitative research involves indepth interviews with workers to learn about their work and quality of life as well as to evaluate the impact of new subcontracting arrangements on these employees, their families and the quality of health care in British Columbia. This project is funded by a SSHRC Standard Research grant (2007-2011).

I am also working on a research project called, "Urban Poverty in the Pacific Northwest: A Four City Comparative Study of Vancouver, Victoria, Seattle, and Portland", which was supported by a Hampton Research Grant (2006-2008).

I recently completed a research project called "Determinants of School Success in Vancouver's Eastside Elementary Schools" in partnership with the Vancouver School Board and the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP). This project, which involves interviews and observations at ten elementary schools in east Vancouver, seeks to understand what school and community factors promote or hinder literacy, numeracy, and social emotional development. This project was funded by a SSHRC Strategic Joint Initiative on Multiculturalism Issues in Canada grant (2006-2008).
