Graduate Studies in Sociology at UBC-Vancouver

UBC has granted Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in sociology since 1970, although the first sociology course was taught at the university as long ago as 1921. The Department of Sociology currently has approximately fifty active graduate students and in 2009 graduated five M.A. and three Ph.D. students. Students in the M.A. and Ph.D. programs in sociology at UBC have the opportunity to specialize in any one or more of the department's seven major areas of specialization: environment, community and social movements; family and life course; gender and sexuality; health and healthcare; knowledge, culture and power; race, ethnicity and immigration; and work, economy and globalization. Detailed information on financial assistance, application requirements and application procedures are provided under the 'Prospective Students' link to the left. Descriptions of the M.A. and Ph.D. programs and related departmental policies are provided under the 'Current Students' link. Profiles of current graduate students are provided under the 'Graduate Student Profiles' link.
