Welcome to the Department of Sociology at UBC. Through excellence in research, teaching and community engagement we seek to apply the principles of UBC's Trek 2010 by preparing our students to become exceptional global citizens, by promoting the values of a civil and sustainable society, and by conducting outstanding research to serve the people of British Columbia, Canada, and the world. As sociologists we do this by advancing knowledge of and engagement with the social world, with a special focus on social processes involving inequality, justice and change. The department has research and teaching specializations in seven key areas:
The Department of Sociology is host to the following:
The CIHR Institute of Aging (IA), a branch of the Canadian Institute of Health Research;
Sociological Theory, a journal of the American Sociological Association (Editor: Neil Gross);
Journal of Comparative Family Studies, the leading journal exclusively specializing in cross-cultural family studies (Editor: Jim White); and
Sojourners: Undergraduate Journal of Sociology (Editor: Hilary McNaughton).
